A guitar is an instrument that requires tuning.

A tuning meter is a tool that makes tuning easier.

Since you can match the sound by sight, it should be easy for even beginners to try it out.

Here we will explain how to do normal tuning.

There are two main types of tuning meters

Broadly speaking, there are two types of tuning meters:

・Tuning meter (chromatic tuner, etc.)
・A type with a tuning meter installed in effectors

For a stand-alone tuning meter, a clip type that clips onto the guitar head seems to be convenient.

The other type is the type that is installed in effectors.

This time we will introduce the tuning procedure for the effector-equipped type.

Normal tuning using a tuning meter

1. Connect the guitar and tuner using a shielded cable
2. Turn the tuner “ON”
3. Turn the guitar volume to full (10)
4. Play the 6th string
5. Turn the pegs and match them with the “E” sound.
6. When “E” is tuned correctly, the center lamp will light up

*When tuning your guitar, be sure to tighten the pegs and keep them in tune.
This is because if you loosen the pegs and match the notes, the notes will no longer match as soon as you play.

7. In the same way, match the 5th string “A”, the 4th string “D”, the 3rd string “G”, the 2nd string “B”, and the 1st string “E”.
8.To confirm again, let’s tune from the 6th string to the 1st string.
9.If there is no deviation in the sound, tuning is complete.

Normal tuning that matches the actual pitch

Next, try tuning each string using the following pattern.

6th string 5th fret and 5th string open (A)
5th string 5th fret and 4th string open (D)
4th string 5th fret and 3rd string open (G)
3rd string 4th fret and 2nd string open (B)
2nd string 5th fret and 1st string open (E)

There is also a way to match it with harmonics.

6th string 5th fret and 5th string 7th fret (both harmonics)
5th string 5th fret and 4th string 7th fret (both harmonics)
4th string 5th fret and 3rd string 7th fret (both harmonics)
4th string 4th fret and 2nd string 7th fret (both harmonics)
2nd string 5th fret and 1st string 7th fret (both harmonics)

Tuning at the actual pitch is done by matching the harmonics of the 5th string and 5th fret with a tuning fork, etc., and then proceeding with tuning.

In the case of a band, there was a time when you would ask the pianist or keyboardist, “Please play the A note,” and then tune the guitar or bass.

In the 2020s, tuning meters are used to tune each tune individually, so I don’t think that will happen that often.

However, there is no harm in remembering how to tune at the actual pitch.

It may be useful when the tuning meter battery runs out.

Summary

So far, we have introduced the normal tuning of the guitar.

You will probably improve quickly if you start by getting your ears used to the correct sound conditions using a tuning meter.
